I am a fan. His matches are always exciting to watch. You can almost always expect a knockout. And when he knocks out, he knocks 'em out cold.
And CJ, he has just defeated Oscar Larios in a unanimous decision to retain his WBC belt.

Hmm, Pacquiao is no doubt in his prime right now...I saw how he decked Larios twice...Nice match, but I also gotta give credit to Larios for withstanding those bombarding punches...

I respect what he does, but I don't buy into his claims that he does it for the country.
Pacquiao's boxing trunks on the day itself told the story of why I'm not too fond of him right now far better than I ever could.

There is no doubt he is doing it for the country. But of course, you can't escape the fact that with his fame, he is one of the most prolific advertisers in the country. Thus, the fully booked shorts of Pacquiao.

Never been a fan of too much advertising on the shorts but at least it's better than on their backs. As for Manny himself, he's a great little fighter with a good future ahead.
Pound for pound he's up there with the best and hopefully he'll continue to glitter his career with some resounding knockouts.

Well, when a fool and his money are soon parted.
The man had an air about him during a photo shoot conducted by a friend of mine, accentuated by the fact that he kept on signing checks left and right without reading what they were for.
EDIT: And I raise my eyebrow at anyone who claims a pawnshop is "your friend" and "for the country". Seriously.

You've got to remember to save your money in that game. It's no fun taking blow after blow to the head when you're in your thirties and the hand speed isn't what it used to be.

I don't think you should blame him for that. It's not easy having your brain collide your skull everytime you take in a punch. The money that he's getting now isn't enough to support the future health problems he's going to be dealing with.
Try boxing for a few years and then tell me decades later how you are. I know because my dad used to be an amateur boxer. He boxed so that he could finish his studies. I feel sorry for the pains he's experiencing...he's paying for what he did to his body when he was young.
Besides, whether or not he's doing it for the money, the whole country's proud of him anyway. We shouldn't begrudge him the money he's making. He earned it.

Oh, no. I'm not begrudging him of the money he makes. I just believe there's a fine line between cashing in on your fame and exploiting it, and the moment he started endorsing a pawnshop, of all things as "for the country", that's when I felt he already crossed that line.
In the ring, I have nothing against him. He's like Ric Flair or Kobe Bryant. I respect what they do in their respective sports, but I have little respect for them as a human being, although I don't think I feel
that strongly about Pacquiao. More like a light disdain for his persona outside the ring.
As an aside though, I find it a travesty that Pacquiao gets this much renown while former world champion Luisito Espinosa now languishes in limbo. It's not a knock against Manny, though. Just a gripe for my favorite Filipino boxer growing up.

Weeell...anyone who has handled fame and is new to it would "exploit" it too. What happened to Espinosa would happen to him also if he's not careful.
I'm sure Espinosa wasn't careful with what he earned in his career, too. Else, he wouldn't be working as a nobody in the US now.

With two supermarkets, a bunch of other businesses, and a street-smart and savvy wife, I somehow doubt (Unless those two get separated.) he'd go the way of Espinosa.
I have to give credit where credit's due. How easily he spends the money they get is how wisely his wife saves/invests it.

It just cracked me up that Larrios and his father were talking a lot about Pacquiao being beaten in his own ring and Manny just smiles and says "We'll see" or something to that effect. I can't help but be proud of him of course and for two reasons... 1) He's Filipino 2) We hail from the same city, General Santos.
I was thinking he would lose to larios though because my brother was so convincing in his theories about hometown pressure.

If anybody caught a glimpse of the Pacquiao-Larios match in Araneta or in their TV, the match went to Pacquiao via unanimous decision. It went to 12 rounds. To Voldee's cause, it might be the fact that his sponsors wanted longer TV time, for their advertisements, thus giving Pacquiao more money than he should've earned if he knocked out Larios in, say Round 3 or 4.

Heh, he was wearing a McDonalds cap and drinking an energy drink in the post-match interview. Plus his shorts just told it all.
I'm all for his matches since well he's Filipino and even if he denies it or not, he's bringing glory to the country everytime he steps in the ring.
What I don't like is his antics outside boxing. I can't help but feel that he's used an 'illness' to skip watching the Suico fight (Suico lost) he promised to watch. May be true or not but that's just my gut feel.

...And HE has concluded the trilogy!
Wow. Pacman caught me by surprise. Three knockdowns in only three rounds! My God! I underestimated him. He's in better shape than he was before.
And what in the heck happened to Morales?! I was hoping he would use that wonderful range of his to win this time around. I placed my bet on him, damnit. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, despite the fact that he lost a lot of weight. He looked quite frail even before the match started. Perhaps boxing is starting to take its toll on his body?
Philippines, get ready for another bout of Pacman interviews, endorsements, and
the other brouhaha that will no doubt come with his victory. At least we can be proud.
Now me and my block's 'Team Morales' owe 'Team Pacman' lunch.

Those are called 'knockdowns', fuzzy, not knockouts.
I knew it would be a crushing. Morales had too much weight to lose and that made his body weaker. He may throw bombs, but he can't take Pacquiao's punches. But three rounds is surprising, knowing Morales' background. He went down early. Way early.
And about Manny's diet, with all of his endorsements in mind, I'm guessing he's on the very nutritious McDonald's diet.

I didn't think Morales would get dominated like this - especially since he looked great in the weigh-ins.

So long, good buddy. It's been a great run.

@fuzzy: No problem. :biggrin:
Retirement. The only thing going for him is his family. And he's already got an illustrious boxing career. But I doubt he'll want a loss for a last match.
Next up for Manny is Barrera. The latter is holding most of the belts in the flyweight division. Most likely, it would be a title bout for they both have championships. And beating Morales would've boosted Manny's ranking. He should be number one contender for Barrera's belts by now.

Most likely it will be a Pacquiao-MAB fight, though someone should really tell Manny to stop going into politics. Everyone knows that he's much better off with boxing.

Apr 26 2007, 01:08 PM
I thought it was the opposite.
I hear MAB is not interested in fighting Pacquaio again. After all, he wants to retire this year. and people want to retire with a good note, not being beaten to a pulp.
JMM on the other hand, is hungry for Pac, and will be ready for Pac's power this time around.
Milliardo Peacecraft
Apr 26 2007, 10:01 PM
I don't think JMM is ready for Pacquiao. The Manny he met is not the same one right now. Manny has more arsenal, isn't one dimensional, and JMM would not be able to cope with the style that Manny has. He might try to keep distance for awhile, but eventually he would have to face Manny squarely, and that's when the beating starts.

It's such a pity that Manny isn't a little bit older. The Barrera Morales trilogy contained some of the best boxing I have ever seen and for if Manny was in his prime back then we really would have seen something special. As it is he should go on to esablish himself as a great in world boxing and, whilst he has the talent to go on to become one of the pound for pound greats, he needs the competition to push himself to those heights.
Milliardo Peacecraft
May 4 2007, 06:03 AM
IMO Manny has surpassed the Morales-MAB trilogy. He's beaten those two guys very convincingly. MAB would still like another go at it, but I don't think he'll do any better than their first encounter.
