Full Version: Some noob qs about hentai

Does the number of eps in a hentai series have anything to do with their success or popularity in Japan? Do they start with a half hour ep, see if it does well, then go on to do more if it does, or do they plan to do two, three, four or five eps in advance? (I was thinking about this because I noticed there were four eps of Taboo Charming Mother at my local hentai store and I was wondering if it was any good or not).

Are the Japanese taking the American market in to account when they do a hentai, or is the US market just an afterthought? (Judging by all the scat, which I don't think is real popular (in fact is very unpopular) in the US, I'd bet w'ere an afterthought.

Why are the anime that show up on premium channels so crappy? (Well, most of it.)

That's a damn good question! Um, I have no idea...

It would seem to make sense that sequels would be based on successful creations, but it may also be possible to design a series based around a series of cliffhangers to draw the audience back for the next one. I know that the majority of H-movies I own are cliffhanger style.

I think most start out as OAV titles which is not a half hour thingy. I may be totally off base here.

And I do think the American market or English speaking market is an afterthought, if done at all by the company. Rather, I think it's up to companies in the U.S. or elsewhere to get the rights to put their own translations in.

Thanks for the info. I think the US as an afterthought market is probably the right approach. I'm glad for that in the case of hentai -- I can't imagine the US having an influence on Japanese adult anime makers having a good effect on them, from my POV.

As for the series, I think the question is still open. It could be that economies of scale make it not much more expensive to produce a three-ep or five-ep series than a one-ep series, though I don't see how it could be so. Og knows there are a lot of 30-minute wonders out there ...
