In the news I heard that California ( I think) is going thru some weird weather right now. I heard there were landslides and floods. Could we be finally feeling the effects of global warming?

The weather was screwy yesterday here in Toronto as well. It was nice and warm in the morning to the afternoon, but when it got to 4PM, the temperature started going down, started raining, and roads started freezing.

Hey, i heard that one of Hawaii's mountain is snowing! It's strange, because it's place with tropical climate, so how could snow falling there?

I freakin' live on the East Coast and we usually get some snow, but it's been lacking on the snow! We had it for about 2 minutes then lost it. None of it sticks, and it really ticks me off. I love snow...

it's freakin' cold here in hawaii...so weird...it's supposed to be not so hot...

Right Now its summer so its hot. Not the good hot, but the humid wet, sticky, hot. Some days its like that and other days its cool like in the 60's. Some days it rains and other days its nice. I have a feeling that this summer will be mild.

Well over here, where I live (go figure), it's unpredictable weather patterns. I mean, one day it's sunny, and some days, like today, it rains like hell. But, also like today, it's cold maybe because it's nearing night time, and is 84 degrees...but it's firggin' cold, freezing cold!! Brrr...

I mean, if it snows here, I wouldn't be surprised...but I like snow and rain anyway.

I could be wrong, but it does seem as if we've had more abnormal temperatures, earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes and landslides in the past couple of years here in America than we've had in a long time.

Perhaps we have put too much negativity into the cosmos? Maybe Mother Nature is a bit pissed?

I warned folks not to vote for Bush!

Meh... I don't think global warming has anything to do with anything. The last few years have been the first time our generation (which is obsessed with finding things to blame for every problem) has encountered extremely harsh weather. Many of the records for the most observed hurricanes in a year (the records are tracked on a per-region basis) were set almost a hundred years ago. The 80's and 90's saw some of the lowest hurricane counts since the 1800's in some regions.

Hurricanes are not new, cities built on the coast BELOW SEA LEVEL and full of MILLIONS of people are new. Killer tsunamis aren't new either, but thousands of tourist traps directly in their line of sight are recent additions too. People are building in stupid places - on beaches, on faults, in floodplanes - and then the media plays it as a TRAGEDY when people who didn't have a little bit of common sense lose everything.

I'm deeply saddened by the loss of life in New Orleans and elsewhere, but in virtually every case of a major natural disaster in the news, the tragedy was totally avoidable had people used some common sense. FOR INSTANCE: I live in the midwest, where we have a threat of tornados. With a tornado, you have a few minutes warning, with a hurricane, you have a few days to prepare. Midwesterners develop very detailed plans for dealing with "the big one" which can be enacted on moments' notice. Why is it that with a WEEKS notice, many people STILL couldn't get out of New Orleans?

It's easier to blame "global warming" for our problems than admit that we've overpopulated dangerous areas and failed to develop plans for the bad situations which are inevitably associated with that. But when L.A. is ripped apart by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, it will somehow be the environment's fault.

Humans... ugh.

LOL  When I finally was able to convince my husband that we should move out of California and back to the midwest, I'd used that as part of my argument. "Why settle here, struggle to spend on an overpriced house, here in a place that could be wiped off the map at any moment without warning?" His response was,

"I'd rather die happy, in a place that feels like home to me than to live out a long and unhappy life some place I don't want to be."

It is a very sentimental argument. And althought I could emphasize with him, I still insisted we move, and we did a month later. But the point that I want to make is that although you feel that these people put themselves in danger (I actually happen to agree to a certain extent, too) by choosing to live where they want to live, you have to remember that it is still their choice to make.

Even more importantly - in regards to the victims of Hurricane Katrina - don't forget that we are talking about the south. Many of these people are poor, "country" folks. I'd bet that the majority didn't choose to live in the part of the country - they just never have been able to afford to move out of the region in which they were born.

And if you are poor - TRULY poor like the majority of the victims still in the damaged areas are, just how do you evacuate an entire region? How are you going to leave? You can't get in your car and go...if you don't own a car! You can't afford to rent a car, either. Forget about buying plane tickets. And where exactly do you go to? You can't afford to stay in a hotel. And most poor country folks live near their family - meaning chances are, they may not have a lot of relatives in other parts of the country.

Sure, these people do hold some accountability for their current distress, but I don't see how the government really helped them get out. The mayor has even admitted that they failed to get the 400 buses that they planned to have pick people up and drive them out of town going. Those buses are sitting under the water someplace.
