Kuni
Though I think Neil Gaiman's a genius, I haven't read much of his work. (I'm not much of a reader - even comics)

it looks good, Nib, though I'm sure you could do better. (the angling looks a little off - but I could be wrong) Death is someone who drinks coffee in a dimly lit cafe? :p It sounds cool! The ray of light is nice. by your artwork, I can see that she has a very pale complexion. The table and her top needs a little more shading, I think, and doing that would make her pop out of the picture more (which she already does). :ok: But the table looks too 2d, like a piece of roundish cardboard in between her elbows and body, I think it's because of the cloth... perspective could save it if you can edit it in the computer. Round tables are such a pain, I know. I think it could be saved in the computer, maybe wash a little shadow on everything but her skin then change the tablecloth. :ok:

It looks great the first time you see it. I love how you made the cup eyelevel so it doesn't just become a footnote. The whole concept is very nice! You're one hell of an artist, Nib! That's where people (including me) lack the most. :agree:

I'm sure a Death collage would be great for you to showcase how much you know her personlity. :agree: That's a great concept, pare. The many faces of Death.

And people, before you hate me, I am only very (very very) critical because I want to help Nib win, because I think he can do it. (and that he can handle what I dished out).
nib
thanks a heap for the critiques Kuni

re: table ~ only noticed it after I scanned it dood. You pretty much said everything I wanted to change about it. I should just remember to sketch a finer pencil guide next time, and double check.

I don't think I could edit it digitally, since I don't quite know how and I don't want to risk finding out how  Better luck next time for me :buck:

Whee! I wub it! I'm sorry I can't be much of a critic, I know. And that cup is so kawaii! The only things I noticed that may be a little off were already mentioned by Kuni--the table perspective and the cup lacked shading. And I don't quite get the background...maybe it could use a little more detail? I don't really know since I'm not an expert, and doing so may ruin the effect you're trying to achieve.

(Then again I just remembered the contest just finished and none of what I said matters nemore. ~_~; )

But I love the face! It's arresting. :lovesigh: I'd want to make a wallpaper out of the whole artwork. :)

yup  I was dying to finish it in time, so I ended up just putting a few half-hearted lines in the hopes of at least making something around her to compliment her.

ah rushing...such a wicked temptation/downfall

(which is why I tried to make up with a Chinese version of Death :cheesy: )

this should really be in the rants thread, but it somehow feels right to post it here.

One of the "deviants" (artists, as DeviantArt calls it's members/subscribers) I've put a DeviantWatch on (a function that works like how you'd subscribe to a forum topic) and chose fave artworks from told me she was inspired by some artwork I did 4 years ago for my college publication.

This girl is one helluva a gifted artist. Even her works in high school can compare to, if not totally outclass the work of most artists (like me) 6 or more years older than her. She's amazing not just with her technique, but she can do multi-leveled interpretations and symbolisms too.

Gets a flat 1 on her plates...can do pencils to paint to photoshop and painter and...gee

I'm fine with being totally outdone/outclassed. What I don't get is...

How can one fairly simple 4 yr.old artwork of mine inspire someone who can make things of far better technique/depth than anything I've ever done all this time I've been drawing? It doesn't make sense. It's like saying Alicia Keys was inspired by Macarena or the Ketchup Song  :buck:
nib
and just today I found out there's this other girl from the US, 2 years younger than her who's twice the art goddess as she is...

(Didn't post the link here, didn't want to blind you people ;) )
nib
man. 16 yr. olds getting commissions, staging exhibits...

I feel so effin' old and...handicapped. Deaf, dumb, "veggie'd"...impotent...

Don't feel bad nib, we're basically in the middle of an art revolution.

The quality of work being produced today surpasses everything.

Ever.

Seriously, in ten, twenty years we'll remark that Da Vinci was "Good for his time." The art community for the past 400 years has been self serving to the point of bordering on masturbatory, with a mindset that nothing could ever compare to artwork centuries old.

The internet has totally leveled every artistic playing field in a way nobody could have imagined. The sacred cows are being swiftly forgotten, and like you said, we've got a bunch of 16 year olds who've been doing this since they were 11 or 12 because all of these doors were opened to then five years ago.

On the one hand it's a shame we kind of 'missed the wave' so to speak and are only as good as the 'old' standards will let us be, but on the other hand, at least when we're old we can take credit for 'ushering in the new talent' or something.
nib
right...this post is irrelevant to the topic, but I just thought I'd share a hilarious script for a play from Deviantart  http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/12930021/
