For starters OB has always been more about discussing anime, games, hentai, et. al. instead of discussing the means of getting them.

However the main reason is that downloading anime is illegal because it constitutes intellectual property theft as defined in the Berne Convention and elaborated upon in laws like the Millenium Digital Copyright Act. Even if a hentai - or whatever - is not licensed by a company in your region, it is still protected intellectual property of its creator. In order to avoid any potential legal problems, the OB mod and admin team prefers to keep any direct reference to filesharing, downloading, and fansubs to an absolute minimum. Anyways, at least two major torrent sites were recently shut down by US companies, who are becoming more protective of their licensed properties.

I do some lurking on fansub forums, and I'd say a good 80% of their membership are dimwitted and annoying pricks who are looking for free anime, always whining when titles get licensed, and quick to irrationally bash anime companies about the quality of their releases, and who are taking a stand to protect their property. None of us long time OB'ers want that type of crowd to come here. We had enough problems on the H-Games board a few months ago.

So that's why we have an anti-piracy policy here.

I understand all those reasons you mentioned of course, but you would think that a forum board where people like to discuss anime and things related would be able to have a certain amount of freedom in saying "download" or "buy a copy". Had a link been included I would understand the suggestion not to do such things as you don't want the board to be reprimanded. The reason the bittorrent sites were taken down is for having the links to the files. It seems strange to attempt to silence that which will continue anyway, as an example my suggestion of "import yourself a legal Japanese DVD release". It reminds me of newspapers using astrixes in place of swear words..ie: S**T, the person thinks it, so why not just put it in there...or avoid the word altogether, which would be the better option.

I'm in no way arguing the rules, just clearifying what I had stated.

Like I said, we are more concerned about discussing the end product rather than discussing the means of getting it.

Another reason why we frown upon references to downloading is because the board is supported by purchases made through the affilliate links at Hentai Neko, Disc 13, and Anime Okashi.

Yes of course, the end product is what matters, and who doesn't know how to get this stuff anyway?...so there's another reason why not to mention it.

It's too bad some people lack the ethics (or money) to buy the series they like even though they have downloaded them. I watched all the episodes of Galaxy Angel before its DVD release, but I am buying the DVDs now. Had I not downloaded it, I probably woulnd't have cared enough to buy it...same goes for Cowboy Bebop...so in some respects downloading can help (perhaps 1% of the time)
