Yeah, but I'd rather let her finish what she started than let her hand the reigns over to those people who're in it just because of the power. Sure, no one's completely clean, but at least she was doing her job.

Maybe she should step down when she finishes whatever it is she's doing, then fix whatever it is that needs fixing (even if Noli's going to be the one who fixes it) then go have a snap election. Right now, I dun think stepping down is what she should do.

My gawd, if Susan Roces runs for presidency... >_<

That SONA made me realize how much GMA looks her age now. She didn't use to look like that. Back then, I was even surprised she's actually older than my dad; she looked so young then.

Now you can see the lines in her face and how thin she's grown.

Like skysenshi, I'd rather let her finish what she's started. The opposition is so divided about what they want to do anyway. They can't even make up their minds past having Gloria resigning. So while they quarrel about that amongst themselves, I say let the lady do her job.
skysenshi
If you ran a country full of pasaways, you'd age faster also. Yeah, I'm sure she had her share of the spoils of corruption, but jeez...I've never seen a president work as hard as she does, except perhaps Ramos.

PGMA's last SONA was chock full of applause and standing ovations too, MarkPoa.

I doubt it's rehearsed, the pauses in PGMA's speech gives cues for applause, and we have to understand, it's a partisan crowd anyway, in a time when vocal support for PGMA is critical, with all the noisy demonstrations going on.

We're doomed if the change to a parliamentary form of gov't pushes through. yikes!

QUOTE
I'd suggest just changing the people running, maintaining, and working the system.

Changing the system, but having the same people in it would not change anything.
For any kind of real change in the quality of our governance, the whole Philippines has to reach (at least) political maturity. Nothing much is gonna happen if you just change the people in position. and only bad things will, if you put in stupid or clueless people in.
firesenshi
the philippine SONA received a lot of standing ovations because it made sense. they only make canned applauses for dolphy (philippine comedian) who's linked to FPJ.

as for the impeachment proceedings, there aren't enough votes.

in a mature republic, GMA would resign... guilty or not guilty! even if she wasn't guilty, like nixon she would!

but fortunately for GMA, our republic is not mature yet. the current government is a product of two former revolutions. of course, there will be bickering. it will take time before this government matures. when that happens, then we all have time to be ladies and gentlemen, and resign amicably.

but at this point, someone has to be up there and fix all the mess up whether y'all respect her or not!

so for goodness sakes,
STOP ALL THE RESIGN CALLS!
skysenshi
Personally, if she did indeed cheat, I'm glad for it. If she didn't, then that dumb FPJ would've won and since he'd be dead in a couple of years, he would've been succeeded by that disgusting poser Loren Legarda. *shudder*

But the SONA didn't delve into that. I just wish those people rallying would just shut up and take pity on this country that they're tearing to shreds. No one else within a 90-mile radius can run this country efficiently as she does. I'm looking at results here, which self-involved people tend to overlook because they're too busy looking after their own hides.

As usual....Malaysian newspaper are paying a lot of attention in Phillipine politics, even more than the whole Myanmar taking the lead seat in ASEAN issue.Although I do not know much nor like the current Phillipine prez much....I think she's doing a commendable job(better than that actor guy anyway). But I do however agree with her statement in the papers when she say that its too easy to oust a president in the Phillipines nowadays.Too much changing leaderships leads to no change at all,IMHO.

ps:-
Oh yeah...I'm kinda envious at you guys right now.The last time there was a demonstration that numbered over 10k here in Kuala Lumpur.....the govt called in the FRUs and kicked up a lot of peoples ass.*cough*AnwarIbrahimFreedomRally*cough*

I wish at least 75% of the lower house vote to proceed with the impeachment trial. Stupid congress. God. Just because you're allied with PGMA, and the middleclass doesn't want her ouster (so she's likely to stay in power), you stick to her like a gecko? I hope I'm wrong, like the complaint lacked substance, or something. (yuck parliament)

And not everyone can just have it at "It's okay if she cheated." for whatever reason, like "Everyone does, anyway, and she's better than any of the alternatives." We're not all cynics here. The Philippines is still a democracy, IIRC. A malfunctioning one, sure, some people think it's bordering on mob rule, and sometimes, it's not like it at all. Look at congress and the impeachment trial that might never happen.

I hate how everyone's ragging on PGMA, jumping on the bandwagon and all. Sheesh.

hehe blue, if Myanmar is skipped and I think it should, Philippines will get "the lead seat".
MarkPoa
er, Kuni, you want the impeachment to go on, but hate the fact that everyone's ragging on GMA? Or merely because everyone's jumping on the bandwagon and showing how much of a carnival our political system is?

Which just goes to show how Philippine politics is like a primetime telenovela ("soap opera")...But anyway, I think GMA has already gained enough ground and support to secure her position...We will just have to see where it takes us from here onwards...

Lol. Not just because of the bandwagon effect, but because people assume too many things. Yes, it's become hip to talk about PGMA in a very bad light, and it's all around me, but what bugs me more is the truth is NOT out in public yet - we don't know the whole truth YET, and people talk about it like they're experts.

But yes I do hate teh bandwagon effect. The whole thing's bringing out things that are very wrong in what/how people think. I've heard someone agree for the call for unity because we're a 90% christian nation, and we should be united. That's disgusting. I've heard people say PGMA's a really bad president because oil prices are sky-rocketing. That's ignorance.

If PGMA's detractors want the truth, a lot of opinion writers say impeachment is probably the way to go, and I happen to think along the same lines. It is true that PGMA's transgression of (repeatedly) calling the comelec official is already very, very wrong - no one can deny that. (is it an impeachable offense?) Don't we want to know the gravity of the fault with a well-supported trial and the light it will shed? (We will also know who's lying, maybe all of them are, really)

I must say though, that I do have some tendency to think that PGMA shouldn't resign because she's better than the alternatives, or that everyone cheats anyway. But I think I don't like that I do. (that's where I'm coming from)

EDIT: lol @ badly edited and backspaced post.

A little something light for the political thread:

All shall kneel before this Presidential Candidate!

And why not? As he said himself:

Instead of hidden agendas and waffling policies, I offer you direct candor and brutal certainty. I only ask for your tribute, your lives, and your vote.

(Strangely enough, I was hoping to post this in What Makes you Laugh, but it seems that that has been deleted.

Also, know what even weirder? This is not the only "______ for 2008" site out there. But some, I was surprised to know, are real and serious.)

OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!

i'm sorry

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. . . I Can't Stop LAUGHING!

Its mean i know but, imagine his voice with every time he has a speech.

HAHAHAHAHA. Still Funny. The other guy was messed up. Still funny though.

On this one site is says that maybe Laura Bush would run in 2008. That would a cool cat fight. Laura VS. Hillary. It would be so sweet to see that.

You sure? It *looked* serious. I mean, there's a lot of thought put into that joke.

I don't care if its real or not i think its hilarous anyway. I would vote for him.
Kuni
Ohh man. I'd love to make something like this. Imagine all the ridiculous responses that they won't even reply to...

but you know, I'd vote for him. He's one of my favorite actors of all time, I certainly like him better than Ahhnold.

i hate rallies, i think it's not doing any good for the country. it only scares the foreign investors who wants to invest in the phils.

anyway...i think GMA is trying to sell our resources to the foreigners in order for her to generate funds. if i'm not mistaken ( i saw it in the news last week) i think she already allowed foreigners to acquire or set -up mass media productions here...meaning they can publish newspapers, tv stations, etc which isn't allowed in the constitution.
Loosecannon
As much as I like the idea of foreign investors entering the country, there is also need to protect our own local industries...The Philippines was poorly prepared at that time, our politicians were too busy squabbling over pork barrel and commitee chairmanships, to notice when "globalization" was already staring our country at the face...

It's been a while since this thread was used...

On to Philippine Politics!

I've been reading more into the political party, Ang Kapatiran and what I'm reading is firming up my conviction to vote for them.

Some key things:

They're a God-centric party. Normally, this would turn me off from a candidate since I really hate the whole "God wants me to run" theme. But no, these people are simply saying they want a conscientious and God-fearing doctrine to guide them. Neither do they espouse a particular religion or belief, providing the idea that "God" can either be Allah, Buddha, Yahweh, Jehovah, or Bathala... and I believe that this is not a party that merely uses religion as a slogan.

They're sticking to their principles. They said they're going to campaign in a non-traditional way, they're campaigning in a non-traditional way. One of the turn-offs people such as I have with Joker Arroyo, who would normally be a shoo-in for my senator list, is the fact that he allied with people he used to oppose or were different from what he represented. Ang Kapatiran's candidates stuck to their guns, win or lose.

Key platforms I agree with: Gun ban, abolishment of the pork barrel, review of government procurement procedures (Man, what a waste a lot of this is), sound economic policies (though partly long-term with some wishful thinking), and some good political clean-up proposals (i.e. disallowing officials from appearing on TV/movies, writing columns, etc.; disallowing billboards with officials' names; ban on relatives running for concurrent or successor positions). Especially the last bits. I'm a bit wary though on their stand on morality, if left unchecked by logic, however, hopefully they'll be able to address that.

Their candidates One of their candidates, Dr. Bautista, gave an interview that highlights some of the concerns above and shows more critical thinking than simply giving tired old advice.

Again, is voting for them a wasted vote? They have no chance of winning anyway, right? We always complain that there are no candidates worthy of the vote or voting only for lesser evils, so this is a chance! There are candidates worthy of our vote so let's vote for them!

So, if you guys have a slot or two or three in your senatorial lineup, please consider the Kapatiran's three candidates. :)

So, my current senatorial lineup:

1.) Paredes
2.) Sison
3.) Bautista
4.) Arroyo
5.) Roco

Nowhere near finished... nor do I think it will be.

I went over the Pinoy Exchange political forums and I was blown away with the blind one-party mentality people had there. It was either "Opposition FTW", or "Administration rocks!"

It's hard to swallow how polarized Philippine Politics is, so sometimes, you just really have to take a deep breath and step back.

And, oh. In case you missed it in the Fan Museum, check out this video, that's also political in nature: http://www.challengeofthesuperfriends.com/teaser.asp
MarkPoa
I told you, dude... the Local and Foreign Issues forum on Pinoyexchange is a nuthouse. Therein lies madness. :rotflmao:
